Comprehensive Vision Examinations

A comprehensive examination in our office starts with a thorough health history that not only includes questions about your eye health and vision requirements but also your general health and family genetics.

The prescription of your present glasses is determined by a computer before your visual acuities are measured.

An eye co-ordination test is performed to make sure both eyes are working as a team both at far and near distances. Depth perception and color vision are also evaluated.

A refraction is performed to determine your new prescription. The familiar “which is better one or two” is made easier and quicker because our computerized auto-refractor has already given Dr. Hogue a reliable indication of the prescription you require. Tests are performed to determine astigmatism correction as well as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and presbyopia. Several tests are used to evaluate the ability to focus from far to near and maintain near focus for tasks such as reading and computer work.

The health of the front of the eye is then examined with a biomicroscope.  Pupil responses are tested to determine neurological status. An eye pressure test is performed to help determine glaucoma risk.

Finally an ophthalmascope is used to look into the back of the eye to search for signs of cataract, glaucoma, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other eye health and systemic diseases.

If necessary a computerized visual fields may be recommended to further evaluate your eye health.

After all this data has been gathered Dr. Hogue will explain and demonstrate the possible solutions to your visual needs allowing you to participate in the final decision.

Contact Lens Fitting and Evaluations

Those wearing contact lenses require several additional tests and follow-up visits to insure the best vision possible and to maintain optimum eye health. Your contact lens evaluation will include:

Analysis of your vision needs and lifestyle
The tightness and health of your eyelids and the size of the opening
Your blink rate
The quality and quantity of your tears
The curvature and health of your cornea
Current medical conditions including allergies
Current medications especially those that may affect contact lens comfort
Discussions of the various contact lens types
Selection of lenses based upon your needs and conditions
Determination of disposability  and wearing schedules
Your adaptation to your lenses including positioning, movement, comfort, visual acuity, and ocular health

Dr. Hogue has been wearing contacts for over thirty years. Successful contact lens wear is a result of knowledge, experience, and having many options from which to choose. He and his staff have over 20 years of contact lens fitting experience and will draw on that experience to provide you with successful contact lens wear. We like the challenge of difficult fits.

Diabetic Eye Health Management

All diabetics should have a thorough eye examination each and every year. Most diabetics do not have a vision change large enough to cause symptoms or warrant a prescription change every year. But it is necessary to determine the status of the health of the eye every year. The pupils will be dilated to insure a thorough assessment of the structures inside the eye particularly the retina. Much of the damage caused by diabetes to the back of the eye can be prevented or controlled with scheduled eye examinations. Dr. Hogue will co-ordinate care with your family physician, help you choose a retinal specialist if needed, and be available for any follow-up care when necessary.

Cataract Co-management

As an optometrist Dr. Hogue does not perform surgery which means you will receive an independent evaluation of your ocular lenses. Every eye examination involves an inspection of your ocular lenses for cataract. If your cataracts are affecting your daily activities Dr. Hogue will discuss the various options available and assist you in choosing a surgeon.   He works extensively with the surgeons at the Cincinnati Eye Institute and our local surgeons.

Lasik Evaluation and Co-management

There is no simple answer to the question “Am I a candidate for the eye surgery?” Dr. Hogue believes that Lasik and the other refractive surgeries may be the best answer for some patients.  Dr Hogue offers an unbiased surgical consultation to help you reach this important decision. He works exclusively with Dr David Schneider at the Midwest Eye Center and Dr. Gary Varley at the Cincinnati Eye Institute.  Optimum vision from eye surgery requires a team effort from eye care providers with many years of experience. The above surgeons recognize the importance of this team approach and have spent their lives studying refractive surgery.

Dr Hogue strongly believes that you usually get what you pay for. The discount prices seen in print and on the radio at some surgical centers should not be considered when deciding on something as precious as one’s eyesight.

Eyeglass Dispensary

Donna has been helping patients select glasses for over twenty-five years. That experience will help guide you in selecting eyeglasses that are well fitted, styled for your facial features and coloring, fashionable, and fulfill your vision requirements.

Our eyeglass dispensary has one thousand frames on display. Top frame manufacturers include Luxottica, Ralph Lauren, Guess, Brooks Brothers, Safilo, Easyclip, EasyTwist, and Titanium. Currently, a popular frame selection is one of the Revolution or Easy Clip frames with magnetic clip-on sunglasses. The magnetic clips can also be custom prescribed for special purposes such as computer work or multi-focal options.  Flexible twist frames are a wise choice for kids.

We also offer a BASIC line of eyeglasses often used for part-time wear such as computer glasses, contact lens wear back-up, sunglasses, safety glasses, sport glasses, special reading glasses or driving glasses.  These are comparable in price to Wal-Mart or Sears eyeglasses but fabricated with better materials and under more stringent guidelines.

Today we have a variety of lens choices in many materials and tints. We offer the latest in ultra-thin lenses, anti-reflective lenses that seem to disappear, progressive no-line bifocals, and changeable tints.
