Dr. Hogue Answers Your Eyecare Questions
Why can I no longer read with my glasses but I can when I take them off?
This question is asked quite frequently by my early forty year olds who are nearsighted. You are experiencing the beginning of presbyopia which everyone experiences sometime after age forty and progressively gets worse until sometime in the mid-fifties. Presbyopia is the inability of the lens that is inside your eye to change focus for near tasks. After presbyopia begins your eyes can no longer do this through your glasses that correct your near-sightedness helping you to see the distance. When you take your glasses off you are now near-sighted which the helps your eyes focus at near. Depending upon the amount of your near-sightedness you will always be able to see better without your glasses than through the smaller windows of bifocals or progressive no-line lenses.
